INVISIBLE DISABILITIES
Really? You don’t look sick. You’re young; you’ll be fine. I’d have never guessed, so it can’t be that bad, right?
It’s frustrating for anyone to be invalidated, especially surrounding health. Individuals living with a disability that is not easily identifiable not only deal with the physical toll but those that are mental and emotional as well. I enjoy providing clients with a safe space to filter the background noise.
Invisible disability counseling is more than validating lived experience. I incorporate treatment approaches such as brainspotting, acceptance and commitment therapy, somatic therapies, and narrative therapy to honor every facet of client experience. Sadness, anger, joy, fear, and anxiety are just a few of the daily emotions individuals with invisible disabilities face during the day. Be it managing stress and frustration or being a safe space to celebrate daily victories no one else understands, clients are given space they need to thrive.
